Traffic Cams Debate

A bill that would increase state oversight on cameras used to enforce traffic laws was delayed in the state Senate Transportation Committee until next week. The delay means another week of uncertainty for cities that have already made plans to install red light or speed cameras at their intersections or on their roads.

Medina is one such city that approved the use of photo enforcement on Highway 45 near Witt Road, earlier this year. Medina Police Chief Chad Lowery expected to have the camera fully operational by mid-April, however the legislation that is slowly rolling through the General Assembly has created a roadblock.

"I was notified about three weeks ago by American Traffic Solutions (ATS) that the state has put a hold on approving our construction," Lowery said. With construction and installation being held up, ATS is waiting to see what rules and regulations the state could adopt before continuing their projects.
