On Tuesday, Jackson police arrested Reuben Fairfield, 26, in connection with the Feb. 7 homicide on N. Highland at Crescent Ave. Fairfield lives at 223 W. Grand Ave. in Jackson. He is scheduled to be formally arraigned at 8 a.m. Wednesday in Jackson City Court on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
Around 7:30 p.m., Jackson police responded to a burglary in progress at the business located at 931 N. Highland Ave. Lionel Deshun Harris, 27, of Marion, Ark., was found dead on the parking lot. Investigators determined that he had been living with his girlfriend in Jackson since Dec. 2010. An autopsy showed that he died from multiple blows to the head with a blunt object.
The investigation has indicated that Harris and Fairfield were acquaintances. On Tuesday evening Harris left Fairfield's home on W. Grand and went to a bus stop in the 1000 block of N. Highland to catch the bus home. Fairfield went to the bus stop, armed with a hammer, with the intention of confronting Harris about a matter concerning a family member.
Fairfield chased Harris across the street. Harris attempted to get inside the business at 931 N. Highland but the door was locked. Fairfield subsequently struck Harris several times in the head with a hammer, killing him. Fairfield fled the scene and attempted to hide the hammer by throwing it in an alley between Division Ave. and Wisdom St. Investigators found the hammer.
The investigation is ongoing.
