Man convicted in toddler molestation

Stephen Wilcox was on trial in Madison County Circuit, Division III, for aggravated sexual battery. Following a two day trial that concluded today, the jury found him guilty of the lesser crime of attempted aggravated sexual battery. He faces a punishment range of three to six years and will remain in custody at the Madison County Jail until sentencing on April 9. Upon release, he will be required to register as a sex offender. These charges stem from Wilcox attempting to molest a three-year-old girl.

On Feb. 11 of last year, Jackson police received a call to an apartment in Lincoln Courts. The investigation revealed that the child had briefly been left in the care of Wilcox, 44, of Morristown. Her parents returned home and found him completely naked in bed with the child, and the child was unclothed from the waist down. Following a brief struggle, the child's father was able to momentarily detain Wilcox before he got away. Police arrested him the next day.
